Traditionally, the fireplace has been at the heart of the home as a place to relax and socialise with family and friends. With this in mind it’s important to take some time to consider the different types of fireplace surround material you can choose from, that will suit you and your home.
A well-chosen fireplace surround and fire can make a stunning focal point in any room of your home. The fireplace surround is the frame to your fire, whether it is solid fuel, wood, gas or electric and careful consideration needs to be given when choosing a surround that is in keeping with the age of your property, the size and style of the room, and your personal taste.
Different Fire Surround Ideas
Fire surrounds are available in a variety of different styles and materials. For example, there are contemporary and modern designs or you may prefer something traditional, or prefer the rustic look. The main materials that fire surrounds are made from are, wood, marble, cast iron, and limestone. So let’s have a look at some fire surround ideas here: –
Limestone Fire Surround
Limestone is a really popular choice for a fire surround as it can be made into contemporary designs with clean edges and geometric shapes, as well as the more traditional shapes with curves and carved edges. It is available in a range of natural colours that will enhance any room setting.

Marble Fireplace
For a luxurious look you cannot beat marble with its polished surface and individual seam, grains and patterns. Like limestone, marble is available in a variety of natural colours such as white, granite, beige and cream.

Wood Fireplace Surround
Wood is excellent for creating a warm cosy look to a room and can be carved into a variety of designs whether modern or traditional. Wood finishes are available in both natural colours such as light oak to a rich mahogany, to coloured painted surfaces. This enables you to match the colour to the rest of the furniture in your room.

Cast Iron Surround
Cast iron fire places look amazing with either a traditional open solid fuel fire, or a gas one. The cast iron is available in a variety of different finishes and designs in both Victorian and Georgian styles. This sort of fireplace lends itself to the period property with its original features or perhaps you have created this style of room yourself. To finish the cast iron off it could be surrounded by more cast iron, ceramic tiles, or granite.

Fireplace Beams
A floating beam can be a good way to finish your fireplace if you do not have a lot of room, or prefer a more rustic look. Wooden beams are now really popular with wood burning stoves and like traditional wood fire surrounds, they are available in a variety of different woods and stains.
