At all times of the year it’s important to look after our heating – while one day it can feel warm, the next as we all know, can feel very different. That’s why we’ve created this blog post with tips to help you keep your central heating working efficiently. Hope it helps!
1. Bleed the Radiators
With the heating on check to see if the top of any radiator is cooler than the bottom. If it is this will be because there will be air trapped inside and this needs to be removed by using a radiator bleeding key at the top of the radiator.
Worcester Bosch have a good article with instructions on how to bleed a radiator.
2. Check the Boiler Pressure
The boiler pressure can decrease over time so this needs to be checked perhaps once a month, because if the pressure is too low the boiler will be working inefficiently.
The pressure gauge on the boiler should show a reading between 1 and 2 and be in the green area. Another helpful guide written by Worcester Bosch – how often you should top up the pressure in your heating system.
3. Your Boiler Should be Serviced Annually
If your boiler seems to be working as it should then you may wonder if you need to get it serviced every year. However just like any major appliance, your boiler needs to be cared for and checked on a regular basis to make sure that it is running safely and that it is as efficient as it should be.
Have a look to see what we do when we service your boiler.
4. Change your Thermostat to a Smart One
An example of a smart controller is the Worcester EasyControl, which is an internet connected programmable control for central heating and hot water which can be operated using a smart device, such as a phone or tablet by downloading an app. We wrote a blog post about smart controllers, their advantages and how they work.
5. Insulate the Condensate Pipe
You may need to insulate the condensate pipe that goes to the outside from the boiler so that it does not freeze in severe weather.
If this pipe freezes the boiler will display a fault code (see your boiler manual for details) and will not work or the boiler may make a gurgling sound. If the pipe has become frozen you will need to defrost it – see the video below which shows you how:-
