Converting Open Fire To A Wood Burning Stove in Exeter

by | Jan 13, 2020 | Fires & Fireplace Projects, General News, Latest Projects, Wood Burning Stove Projects

Project summary

We were visited by customers who wanted to convert their open fire to a wood burning stove – at the time they had a traditional solid fuel cast iron fireplace and classical fire surround and were interested in fitting a traditionally styled wood burner without a fire surround.

How much it costs to change an open fire to a wood burning stove.

The stove itself will usually cost about £700 – £1,500 and the costs of preparing the chimney/flue and fitting the stove will be about the same again – of course how much this will actually be depends on the individual circumstance, so we always recommend that we have a chat first, and visit the property to be able to give you an accurate / realistic quote.

How much it costs to change an open fire to a wood burning stove.

In the case of this particular customer, after browsing the stoves in our showroom and talking to our knowledgeable staff, a home visit was arranged to check the existing fireplace and chimney would be suitable for a wood burning stove.

Measurements of both the available fire / hearth space were taken so that the correct size of stove could be ordered – also different heat outputs will be required depending on the size of the room to be heated, so measurements of the room were also taken. The survey also highlighted any additional work that was required (such as supplying and fitting flue liners and plastering).

The existing fireplace, surround and hearth were removed and surfaces prepared following the survey and final agreements of costs, timescales and having chosen the woodburner to be used.

Next, a rustic brick chamber was built into the fireplace and this type of brick gives a lovely warm background to a wood burner. The wall was then made good and re-plastered before fitting a honed granite hearth and back hearth. On top of this an Acr Malvern 5kw wood burning stove was fitted.

Finally all tests were carried out to make sure that the wood burning stove was working safely and at it’s optimum efficiency, and then the finished job was presented to the customers who (we are glad to say!) were very happy with the final result.
