However, today the flame effects are so realistic it is sometimes difficult to distinguish from the real flame of a wood burner or gas stove. They now come in a wide range of styles from traditional looking fireplaces to something very contemporary.

We have recently fitted this free-standing electric fire (above – before and after photos). This fire comes with logs and is the Gotham 600 from Flamerite Fires and is set in a marble surround and hearth.

You will need an electricity supply nearby to power your electric fire, so it is worth taking that into consideration when deciding where to put it. An electric fire normally comes with a 1.5metre electric cable.

The photos above show an electric fire that has been inset into the wall cavity (blank wall before the work, the cavity created by removing bricks, and the finished fire). The cavity enables the fire to fit further back into the marble surround and give a more realistic effect.

The pictures below show another fire we have fitted where the free-standing electric fire looks like a wood burning stove. The electric stove is by Dimplex and it is fitted in a marble surround from Capital Fireplaces.

The left-hand photograph below shows the blank wall where the fire is to be positioned. Note the available electric socket for the fire to be connected to the power supply. The right-hand photograph shows the marble hearth in position and the surround being constructed.

The other photographs below show the Dimplex electric stove fully installed in the marble surround. An attractive feature of this surround is that it has lights recessed into it which gives the fire and fireplace a warm cosy feel without the fire being switched on.
