There are different types of fuel to run your boiler to choose from, however, and picking the right one can be a little confusing. You want reliability at a relatively low cost but you also need your heating system to have energy saving attributes that will benefit you for years to come.

LPG Heating

Liquid petroleum gas or LPG is suited to homes that are not connected to a mains gas supply. Boilers using this fuel nowadays are highly efficient but you do need to be prepared to pay extra for deliveries and have somewhere to store the LPG in the first place. There are some 4 million homes across the UK that are off-grid and use LPG but it’s not the best option for homes that have a normal gas supply.

Electric Heating

Electric heating has come back into fashion in recent times especially for those wanting to move away from gas. Electric powered boilers are a little more limited in the amount that they can ‘properly’ heat, however, so if you have a large household and need plenty of hot water it may not be the best choice. Despite the relatively low cost of installation, electricity is still more expensive than gas so you could be expect to spend more on your utility bills over the long term.

Oil Heating

This is another choice for off-grid homes that aren’t connected to a gas supply mains and like LPG you need to have somewhere to store the oil and have it delivered direct to your property. While oil is reasonably cost effective and efficient, many people are starting to move away from it to more carbon friendly solutions. Using oil means that you are also more dependent on fluctuations in oil prices which can have an effect on your bills.

Gas Heating

Almost 70% of the UK have a gas boiler to provide your hot water and central heating – it’s by far the most popular choice for home heating. Gas is cheaper than many other fuels and the latest boilers are highly energy efficient. Combi boilers take up little or no space compared to traditional boilers with storage tanks and they can operate at over 90% efficiency. Unlike LPG and oil heating, you don’t need a stored supply nearby and it’s a dependable and safe home heating solution.

An efficient boiler can make a huge difference to your overall utility bills across the year. Not only can the newest ranges of energy efficient gas boilers be linked up to smart devices and controlled better, but they also provide realtime cost savings. When you consider that up to 60% of your energy bills can come from running your heating system, especially in winter, it’s all the more important to choose the right boiler when you are thinking of changing from your old system.
