For those of you with an existing or older boiler however, finding out is your boiler is working efficiently is vital. A poorly performing boiler may be costing you more, lead to a colder house and at worst may be dangerous. A boiler that is not working efficiently may be a signal that it’s time to get an engineer to give your boiler a service or carry out some repairs. It may even point to you needing your boiler replaced.

Here are a few signs to look out for:

1. You’re Using More Gas

One sure sign that your boiler isn’t working as efficiently as possible is when your gas bill starts to go up. While this might be down to the utility company putting up their prices or unseasonably colder weather (compare your bills to the same months in previous years), it can often mean the problem is a little close to home. It always makes sense to monitor your gas usage, especially over the colder winter months when the boiler can often be working overtime.

2. Your Central Heating is Making Noises

Noises can often mean that your system isn’t working as well as it should. Maintaining radiators ensures you get proper heating but looking after them also forms part of the warranty for many boilers. Should you hear a clunking sound in the boiler itself, that could also mean you have a more serious problem with water boiling in the pipes for example.

3. You are having problems with your Hot Water and Heating

Lack of heat or water that is too hot can both mean that the settings for your boiler are not working properly and need the attention of a qualified professional service engineer. Lower pressure can mean that you have a leak somewhere that is affecting your heating system.

4. When Was Your Boiler Last Serviced?

Ideally, you should have your boiler serviced every year. The best time to have it done is just before the start of winter when it’s just about to get cold. This is normally part of any warranty agreement so you need to make sure you have a regular service even if your boiler has been recently installed. A service engineer will check your boiler is still fit for purpose and make sure all the components are working properly. If areas like the flue terminal are blocked, for example, it can impact on the way your system operates. During a service an engineer can check your radiators and also ensure the casing of your boiler is cleaned if necessary.

Do You Need a New Boiler?

Older boilers can be much less efficient and cost you quite a lot in repairs over the years. Having said that, replacing your boiler with a new boiler requires an investment too.

Choose the right reliable appliance with a high efficiency level and you should expect to have little or no repair costs for a long while – and a new efficient boiler will also reduce your gas bill. When you consider that the heating in a home accounts for around 60% of your annual bill, it makes sense to ensure that this area is operating in the best possible way.
